Hunting for 82 years, man gets first moose

LISBON  — Eugene Dackmine was 9 years old when his uncle bought him his first hunting rifle. That was 82 years ago.

Now
91, Dackmine is still an avid hunter. Last month, the Lisbon resident
shot his first moose, and a week later he nailed a turkey.

Dackmine
has had a lifelong passion for hunting and the outdoors. After
retirement, he used to spend winters in Florida. But Dackmine says
that's no longer an option. Even if it's snowy and cold, he'd rather be
in the Maine woods.

He told the Sun Journal of Lewiston that he
worries about nothing — and wishes that other people would feel as well
as he does. He turns 92 on Nov. 11.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As for you freaks that have your head up your azz ... it's one thing to kill for nothing or just sport than to put food on your table
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

AND for Gods sake if you're gonna badger someone for bishing about slaughtering at least know what the difference between slaughtering & dressing is ... will ya dummy.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If I had a beautiful fur coat to wear, believe me I would. They are the warmest (I wore my grandmother's fur back in the 70's until it fell apart)! warmer & more beautiful than any other.
at least the guy is out there trying to put meat on the table. marian i hope you arent getting ssi and on mainecare you leach
AMEN maine hunter.
i personally dont hunt, but that is MY choice. i DO enjoy the taste of venison and moose,and am very greatful when some comes my way.as you stated, this country was founded by people living off the land.
i would rather ingest an all natural, no chemical, growth hormone fed creature, than the garbage sold in the supermarrkets today. i dont care what scientists or those who know everything say...if that critter eats it , so do you.if it is injected into or fed to and animal, it is absorbed by the body and where does it go from there? hmmmm, maybe the dinner table?
a huge congratulations ...and a very happy upcoming 92nd birthday to you mr. dackmine!!!
i can only hope to make it to that age, say nothing about accomplish a feat like that. too bad others cannot say the same.KUDOS to you sir.
 congrats on the kill but me I don't want to be in woods with a 92 year old [most of em ] and a gun actually don't want to be near the woods this time of year. N.H. state liquor stores do a booming business as do troopers with the hunters headed north
I can only hope that I am able to have the good health and fortune as Mr. Dackmine if and when I reach his age to be able to harvest wild life in our great state.  My hat is off to you sir!
To those who do not understand I doubt you ever will.  I must ask, however, do you eat anything that moves, crawls, or flies?  Burgers? Chickens?  Lobsters?  Clams?  Turkey? The main difference is that in the wild the game you pursue can and most times do, get away!
The truly defenseless animals are those that come packaged from the grocer or arrive on your plate at the fast foodies or restaurants.  The real thrill for the true outdoorsman is the chase itself along with the ablility to be in the great outdoors and enjoy the sights, sounds, smells and emotion that comes with being there in the first place. It is not all about the kill.
 But, as I have already stated, for those of you who have never done it nor grown up in this hunting/fishing culture as part of your upbringing, you won't understand.
 I hope you get your deer as well Mr, Dackmine. Good luck and God speed sir.
Kudos to you Maine Hunter.  Could not have said it better my self!
Marian and Connie - you're both right! That moose would have been better off freezing to death in a pond come January than taking a bullet and being food this month. How inconsiderate of Mr. Dackmine and the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife for interceding in nature's circle of life.
Marian....humans consume meat. Some people don't mind getting their hands dirty and providing for themselves while also enjoying all that being outdoors in nature can provide.
Some like yourself would rather purchase dead animals that someone else killed, slaughtered and neatly packaged.
Nothing wrong with getting your dead animal in the grocery store either, but you do realize those farm animals completely trusted that farmer until that fateful day they became meat.
Kudos to Mr. Dackmine.
Well these animals aren't "defenseless" as you point out. They live in the wild and depend on their abilities to survive unlike alot of humans who depend on the government to survive. I hope Marian and Connie don't eat any meat at all to voice opinions like that. They should watch what happens in a slaughter house if they like to eat meat at all. Those truly are defenseless animals with no chance of escape. Now if you two are vegetarians, aren't you being hypercritical when you must eat veggies to survive. They have roots so they can't get away like an animal does. Can you be certain that plants don't feel pain as a gardener chops off a head of lettuce or an ear of corn?
Geez.....Connie. The article doesn't say he slaughtered the moose himself. That a big job.  He proberly brought it to a professional butcher for that.
Maybe even the same butcher that slaughters the animals that you and your family eat.
It is nice that the old gentleman is able to go out into the woods and shoot.  However, what joy is there in shooting two defenseless animals?   I don't understand.  Please enlighten me.
How sweet. Now he can die happy after slaughtering an animal.
Are you kidding me?  I hope that Marion and Connie are absolute Vegans.  It is the only way they can honestly post those comments.  If you chose not to hunt, then it is absolutely your right.  How dare you try to make a hunter (let alone one that is 91 years old) feel shame for harvesting an animal that he/she plans on putting on the dinner table!!!  This was a trip of a life time for Eugene.  Compare it to a trip to a PETA conference in your case.  If you hit 4 deer with your car, and had Black Bears rummaging through your garbage every night, hunters would be a welcome sight.  Without hunting, certain animal populations would explode, and cause extreme stress on other animals (i.e. current turkey population).  Let us not forget this country was founded and explored by those that lived off the land.  I will bet you a dollar you have never been to a chicken slaughter house, or seen how a baby cow is CAGED in a 4 foot diameter pen before being turned into veal on your plate at Dimillos Resturaunt.  I prefer, and feel safer, eating the hamburger from the moose that I SHOT this year ( the animal took 4 steps before dying...perfect kill shot).  So go ahead buy your hambuger from Shaw's.  Don't forget to watch the news to see if it contains Ecoli.....4 days after you served it to your entire family.
To Eugene:  Hope yours tastes as good as mine, CONGRATULATIONS!!!
